- It can serve as a stain treater when applied directly to stains prior to wash cycles, something that powder detergent often cannot do.
Powder Detergent
- It’s effective. While liquid detergent may have many convenience benefits, know that powder detergent is still very effective if you’re buying the right type.
- It’s cheaper. Liquid detergent typically comes in more convenient packaging, which can be nice — at least up until it comes to price. Powder detergent is typically sold in a box, which makes it a cheaper overall purchase.
- Though it’s designed to dissolve, some of it might chunk up in the wash.
The bottom line is that both powder and liquid detergent are great solutions under a few conditions. One, make sure you’re buying the detergent with the ingredients necessary to get your clothes clean. And two, stick to your personal preference. Sit on a washer or dryer, stand next to a front-loading washer in action, slyly carry a laundry basket down an aisle. You get the picture (pun intended) — do something to make your snap pop. Have some fun with this!
- Use filters: Filters can really add to your laundrogram, especially if you’re in a unique outfit. If you’re in old-fashioned wear, give it a black and white filter. If you’re wearing spring colors, use a bright filter.
- Switch it up: Don’t just take one pose in one outfit, take a whole gallery of pictures in various outfits. Then post to your Instagram account as a photo gallery and not just a one-off picture. It can be a nice way to showcase all of the cool shots the laundromat has to offer.

Laundry 101: A Quick Guide for Beginners
- Sort your clothes: We suggest sorting your clothes into three piles: darks, lights and a mixed load. Put all dark garments into the dark pile, white and off-white garments into the light pile, and gray and tan items into the mixed pile. You want to pre-sort your laundry so colors don’t bleed in the wash. For instance, if you wash a red shirt with white clothes, the red will turn the white clothes pink.
- Pick a load: Depending on the washer, you may be able to select a load size (i.e., small, medium, large). Wash whites and lights in warm water and everything else in cold water. Hot water should only be used for disinfecting purposes, like with bath towels and washcloths. Start each load by letting water fill the tub, then add the detergent. Once the detergent fully dissolves in the water, add your clothes to the load.
- Set the load: There are various load settings, but you’ll probably be washing most on a normal load. There’s also a gentle load cycle option and a permanent press cycle for more delicate items.
- Dry it: After the wash cycle is done, it’s time to dry. For sweaters and items you’re worried about shrinking, dry them at a low heat or hang them to dry. For things like undershirts and underwear, a hot drying cycle should be fine. Check the tag on garments to see how the manufacturer recommends drying them if you’re unsure what is best.
